Great Instructional Design attracts learners to the content, to the performance ideal, and to the change process. This attraction is essential for changing behavior. Change is difficult at best and painful at worst. But when we are attracted to something we are willing to change for it. We want to absorb it and ingest it and become it. Not because someone tells us we should, but because we want to. Because we are attracted to it. I write a lot of content, and I can tell you that even the best content is no substitute for design.Find a good consultant: You must consult the real estate people before you buy a new home for dealing the properties. As painful as it may be, feedback is a big contributor to our Leadership Development. Feedback is often a key element in personal learning and improvement. It helps us to size up and see ourselves as others see us. We may not agree with the perceptions of others, but unless we know how we're perceived, we stand little chance of improving our relationships and effectiveness with them. Feedback also gives us another opportunity to reflect on our behavior from the view point of others. It provides outside perspectives on the exploration of our inner space. My mind was inundated by a multitude of words I wanted to say to her, but that I did not utter: my parents had educated me well after all. I was thinking to myself: "Please don't keep my file and don't ever contact me again!" And "I am being realistic: you really have no idea of what you're doing and how to match positions with candidates regardless of the recruiter title on your business card." Quietly, I stood up. She looked offended by my obvious declination of her offer. I did not care. I was not offended though: I was rather amused. I extended my hand, shook hers, thanked her and left.A wise man once said. "Investors don't like you, or your company. They don't care about your products. They just need to know how they are going to make money-or they'll get fired if they don't." Just because someone can use eLearning authoring software, doesn't mean they know anything about adult learning principles. The same applies to face to face trainers - just because someone knows their subject well, doesn't mean they know how to transfer that knowledge into meaningful and engaging learning (telling isn't training!). Good trainers also have training skills, and good elearning courses have been built around solid Instructional Design principles.Report within the organizational structure. So I need to understand their perceptions of my behavior. My effectiveness in leading, relating to, or working with others is highly dependent on their perceptions of me. I may not agree with what they see, but their perception is our reality. Those around me have an opinion of who they think the real me is. Their perceived "truth" becomes the way they treat me. Their perception forms their part of the reality of our relationship. One might argue that if Instructional Design encompasses all aspects of creating eLearning materials, then it begins to phase out the need for professional IDs because any subject matter who knows the design tools can develop eLearning. I disagree. Just because someone knows how to use the tools doesn't mean he or she knows how to write instructionally. In fact, I believe the more an ID can branch out, the more marketable and necessary we become. It's one-stop shopping.
